16 days of activism against gender violence began on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. WACC is calling on its networks and friends to participate in takebackthetech campaign to end online violence against women and girls campaign organised by APC Women, a global network that supports women networking for social change and women's empowerment through the use of ICTs. WACC promotes local efforts for “zero discrimination” in HIV and AIDS Print E-mail

As communities around the globe mark World AIDS Day on 1 December, there is a new emphasis on “Getting to Zero”: achieving zero deaths, zero new infections and zero discrimination by 2015. These goals, set by UNAIDS, set the targets for the treatment, prevention, care and support needed to overcome the HIV pandemic. WACC’s long standing focus on gender-sensitive communication strategies to reduce HIV-related stigma and discrimination is particularly relevant today, as women make up 50% of people living with HIV – 59% in sub-Saharan Africa. The General Secretary of the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), Rev. Karin Achtelstetter, was among five global leaders awarded Doctor of Divinity honoris causa by the Academy of Ecumenical Indian Theology and Church Administration at its 23rd Convocation held at Asha Nivas, Chennai, India, November 12. Founded in 1987 the Academy recognizes and honours women and men in India and outside the country, who have made significant contributions to affirming the values of church and to promoting the welfare of society. The impact of digital media on journalism and development” was the theme of the German “Forum Media and Development” symposium (FoME) held at the Deutsche Welle in Bonn, Germany, on 25th and 26th of October. The Symposium explored how “ digital technology” is changing production, distribution and consumption of media and its potential to contribute to the development of free and independent media in developing countries. José Luis Aguirre, President of WACC Latin America Print E-mail

José Luis Aguirre, President of WACC Latin America also new WACC Global Board  Director, is the Director of Servicio de Capacitacion en Radio y Television para el Desarrollo  (SECRAD), a unit of the Universidad Católica Boliviana (UCB) in La Paz, Bolivia. He has been involved with WACC since the 1990s when he was directing Radio San Miguel de Riberalta, a church radio station in the Beni area of the Bolivian Amazon. The radio joined WACC and José himself became a personal member. He has actively advanced WACC in Andean regional and Bolivian gatherings.  Some of WACC’s Andean sub-regional meetings have been held at the UCB. During all this time, he has found WACC publications to be very useful. Read more...
