By María Teresa Aveggio, Programme Manager | | For the last four years an innovative project, Radio 1812, has marked International Migrants Day in a striking way. An initiative of the International Resource Centre on the Human Rights of Migrant workers, Radio 1812 is a world wide event which brings together “groups of migrants and radios to produce, broadcast and share programmes that celebrate the achievements and highlight the concerns of migrants worldwide.” WACC encourages its members, associates and project partners to join Radio 1812. |
Since the year 2000 the world has marked International Migrants Day on December 18. The date was chosen as a symbol of the day when in 1990 the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (http://www2.ohchr.org/english/law/cmw.htm ). It took 10 years of campaigning and incessant advocacy by migrant communities for the UN General Assembly to declare 18 December as International Migrants Day.
The purpose of this day is to recognise the contributions made by millions of migrants to the development and well-being of so many countries in the world; to demand an end to all forms of abuse and violence against migrants and their families and promote respect for their basic human rights; to call on governments around the world to ratify the UN Convention on Migrant Workers; and to hold governments accountable with regard to the rights of migrants.
While only 50 radio stations participated in the first Radio 1812 last year, that number increased to 243 radio stations in 50 countries in four continents. Participants ranged from community radio stations to international broadcasters.
Over the years, WACC has supported a number of radio stations in Latin America, Africa and Asia.WACC therefore calls on its members and associates as well as project partners to participate in Radio 1812 to mark International Day of Migrants.
